Dear Nancy and Beth,
I was so sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. He sure was quite a guy. The history he experienced was fascinating, and what a gift it was for him to share it with all of you on your trip to France. How wonderful that he had so many healthy years. Please know that I am thinking of you and your family.

Nancy, My condolences on the loss of your father. I had the privilege of speaking with him on the lawn of Davis School. He gave me good suggestions that I appreciated. I had no idea he was a war hero. You must be so proud of his accomplishments.
Not many can say they had a hero as father. Enjoy the memories of a fine gentleman.

Mr. Johns was such a nice man. I remember upon moving next door he told us just to call him grandpa. Being a gardener myself, I really enjoyed seeing him outside working on his yard. He was amazing and always busy. I admired and respected him so much for his devotion to his fellow WWII veterans. He shall be missed.

I met Stu Johns on a battlefield tour of Normandy in 2004. He was accompanied by his family and we were following the path of the 4th Division, in which Stu served. His stories of the war were listened to in rapt attention by all the tour members. A couple of years later we met again on a tour following 2nd Division, in which he brother served. Stu never spoke much about the action for which he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, the second highest bravery decoration for other ranks. I have attached a description of this action to remind us that Stu was a true hero.
“The advance by the Lake Superior Regiment (LSR) and No. 2 Squadron Canadian Grenadier Guards (CGG) continued on 26 April 45, meeting strong resistance at road blocks. The infantry-tank cooperation was excellent and slowly but surely the advance continued without casualties. One impressive example of this cooperation was provided by No. 1 Troop, which, when both the troop leader’s and troop sergeant’s tanks had mechanical trouble, was being led by Cpl S.L. Johns. When it approached a road block, enemy machine-gun fire forced the LSR infantry to go to ground and panzerfaust fire prevented the two tanks from going on alone. Cpl Johns spotted a covered approach that the infantry could use but from the ground could not be seen. He got out of his tank in the face of heavy fire, joined the infantry, and guided them into a position where they could outflank the German defenders. Then, getting back in his tank, Johns summoned up a Badger flame-thrower and so directed the fire that the enemy was overrun. For his leadership under fire, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal."

Sending so much love from the Card Family. I loved meeting and spending time with Laura’s Grandpa when we were in High School. He was always so welcoming and kind. Whenever Laura spoke about her Grandpa her entire face would light up and you could feel the love and beautiful connection they shared. As grandchildren we are never ready for this day. May your amazing memories and adventures together comfort you during this time! Love you!

Blake, Hazel, Chase, Lachlan, Niall, Isabelle - Great-Grandpa Stu kept a garden. A garden of the heart;
He planted all the good things, that gave your lives their start.
He turned you to the sunshine, and encouraged you to dream:
Fostering and nurturing all the seeds of self-esteem. And when the winds and rain came, he protected you enough;
But not too much because he knew, you could stand up strong and tough.
Rory, Devin, Laura, Stuart, Kevin and Amy - His constant good example, always taught you right from wrong;
Markers for your pathway that will last a lifetime long.
Grandpa Stu was someone who always had good stories to tell,
but just as importantly he knew how to be a good listener as well.
He was patient and kind, and the very best grandpa you could ever hope to find.
You are your Grandfather’s garden… you are his legacy.
Jo-anne and Rick, Nancy and Beth -
A Hero’s Welcome by Robert Longley Time to come home dear brother your tour of duty through. You’ve given as much as anyone could be expected to do.
Just a few steps further
the smoke will start to clear, others here will guide you you have no need of fear.
You have not failed your brothers you clearly gave it all
and through your selfless actions others will hear the call.
So take your place of honor, Among those who have gone before and know you will remembered for now and evermore.
Sending you all my love,
Gina Marcon
