Dear family,
I learned the death of Doug this morning, while exploring on Internet about some people I worked with.
Let me express my sincere condolence about Doug.
Doug hired me in spring 1982. This was my first full time job. I was then 24. I was hired as a PC1 by the office of Environment Canada, Inland Waters Directorate, Water Quality Branch located at Place Vincent Massey at Hull (now Gatineau). At that time, Environment Canada had been blamed for having a too low level of french speaking employees. So, I came to work with Doug as my supervisor, under the authorithy of Tom Dafoe and Bill Traversy. Our mission was to implement a Canada wide water quality monitoring network, to be able to know the status and trend of the resource. This implied the negotiation of agreements with all provinces to share field work efforts and data. The first agreement had to be negotiated with the Province of Quebec. Therefore, I helped the Branch acting as a secretary, who organized the meetings and wrote the minutes, a lot of minutes. I also helped Doug to learn french. He was quite good when I left in 1986. I also remember our long walk during lunch time, frequently in a large quarry that would become the Casino. Doug was a very clever men, patient, intelligent, listener, with a good sense of humour. I ow a lot to Doug for the success of my career. Therefore, the least I could do was to send a late hello to the family.
Yours, Louis Desilets biol. M. ATDR, M.A.P.

My sincerest condolences to Margaret, Simon, Carl and all of the Haffner family on the loss of Doug. I am greatly saddened by Doug's passing. Doug was a great person, passionate scientist, caring and thoughtful mentor to students and to interested people alike, and a great friend and colleague of mine. Doug was an effective and animated communicator with a talent of turning you to his manner of thought and doing so with persistence and with disarming charm. I remember the years (2000-2004) fondly as a University of Windsor faculty member (Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry) and a core member of the GLIER faculty team and working in collaboration with Doug. His intellectual insight and ideas were always impactful and beneficial to the success of a project. These are difficult times with Doug's passing but there is so much to celebrate about Doug and his life where he has left an everlasting impact during his lifetime.
