I worked with Darren for almost 20 years and I am still in disbelief of his sudden passing. There are no words. He changed my son's life by suggesting he participate in the Rotary International Student exchange. My son was successful in going to Japan almost a year after High School. He loved the country so much that he returned years later and worked in Japan for almost 4 years.
My sincere condolences to Lori and family.

Darren is one of the first colleagues who reached out when I started with the province in 2014. Over the years, we shared many conversations about work, and possibly even more conversations about topics other than work including family, travel, craft beer, chicken husbandry and our dogs. Darren was someone I could always turn to for insight, support or just to share a laugh. He is greatly missed in Regional Services Branch. His legacy here lives on in the communities he supported and the staff he mentored. Sending my deepest condolences to Darren's family and friends.

Our deepest condolences to you Lori and all who were blessed enough to have called Darren their friend. Darren stood up in our wedding over 36 years ago and has always been someone we cherished. Meeting Lori was a major turning point of genuine love and joy in Darren’s life and we enjoyed a number of great times together as two couples. From that first day of grade nine together at Massey Secondary school in September of 1978 when Barry first met you until now, may you rest in peace our very dear friend.

I attended Massey with Darren from Grade 9 through Grade 13. We shared many classes together. He was well liked by everyone and could always be counted upon for an honest opinion. We reconnected via Facebook and I enjoyed reading his posts about travel and cycling adventures. Coincidentally, my son has been doing some pro bono photo shoots for Bike Windsor Essex and he got to know Darren as well. ….. Rest peacefully old friend. May your memory always be a blessing.

Darren was such an important part of our family at the Regional Services Branch of the Government of Ontario. He spent an enormous amount of time supporting the community and his coworkers. At work, he was a rock, always ready to impart his expertise and love of community development. He was also our union rep, and we could always turn to him when things at work were tough. We had him in our corner and were better for it. His loss is deeply felt by everyone at work. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Sincere condolences to Lori and the entire Winger family. My heart is filled with gratitude for the incredible mentorship of Darren Winger, whose sudden death is a profound loss across the festival industry in Ontario. From years of attending FEO Conferences, working the Detroit Marathons at 4am, In Motion couch potato races, Tweed Rides, grant meetings, biking and drinking craft beer, my friendship with Darren was inspiring. He pushed my career forward, kept raising the bar and will be missed forever. (The legacy of Feo the Cow will live on)

Darren- I won't be able to peek at a jaunty tweed cap or a vintage sweater vest without thinking of him! Darren was colourful, zestful, a true gentleman, charmingly direct, champion of the under dog, coach and mentor. He was such an inspiration to myself and to so many in the tourism, arts and culture industry. My heart goes out to Lori and the boys ....and for all of us he touched so deeply- he will be remembered often and with a smile.

Darren was a true friend of mine, and my twin brother, Barry, during our years at Massey (1978-1983). We spent many lunch hours at his home just down the street from the school. It was also nice that he and Lori could come to a bike event a few years ago in my town (Wallaceburg). Prayers to his whole family!

I first met Darren during our lifeguard days at Central pool. We continued to socialize with the same group of aquatic friends enjoying summers and working within Recreation.
Our paths would cross from time to time as I stayed in the Recreation field. As Darren moved into his Ministry position our lives would cross once again. He was always a gentleman, kind, considerate and welcoming. As things happened and his life with Lori began we would again see each other at special events. He always asked how I was doing first, we'd chat about our lifeguard days, ask who we still see and go on with life. He will be missed by many as he touched the hearts of everyone he worked with or volunteered with.
Rest in peace Darren

I always loved running into Darren in the basement of Windsor Squash or enjoying a sauna at Performance Fitness or down the street on Bruce Avenue before he moved. I loved hearing about his travel stories and view of the current state of politics. Hearing about all his accolades doesn't surprise me as he was always such a kind, considerate person to everyone!

I met Darren on my first day of work in Parks and Recreation Windsor in 1987. At that time he was the young manager of Mic Mac Pool. Welcoming and knowledgable Darren helped me adjust to working in recreation without any real experience in the field. His dedication to his parents and to Lori and the boys was inspirational and life affirming. May he be cycling in heaven.

Heartfelt condolences to Lori and family. I had the pleasure and opportunity to work with Darren at the Duff-Baby House, an historic building that held lots of stories as the oldest building in Windsor and Essex County. Darren loved this place and shared his knowledge of the history and stories of the ghosts with me. When we had a few moments we would chat about life, politics, the community, our work and our family’s. Smart, dedicated, adventurous, ready to laugh and advocate for ideas and the community organizations that he worked with over the years. He was my first point of contact regarding union goings on. He always knew the best places for our house lunches and what was on the go around town. Darren will be missed and may his memory be a blessing to all that knew and loved him.
The photo attached was taken at the Duff-Baby House on the occasion of a visit from then Premier Wynne and MPP Teresa Piruzza. Darren was showing off this gem of a building and sharing its stories.

I am shocked and deeply saddened to see this news. I have known Darren for more than 15 years and he was one of the most totally dedicated public servants I have ever met. He was a strong champion for our southwest region, especially when it came to tourism and cultural development and helped secure countless grants and opportunities for us in Chatham-Kent over the years.
He was very kind to me personally as well, regularly checking in after I left the Municipality and helped connect me to various opportunities and key decision-makers. We were also fellow Rotarians and whenever he was in Chatham for work he would always come to our Rotary Club of Chatham meetings, always with a smile on his face. All my memories of Darren are positive ones. I’m so sad to hear this news and send my deepest sympathies to Lori and all who knew and loved Darren - he was a true community champion and will be deeply missed.
